How do I know if my swimming pool is leaking?
Answer:
The most common indication that you have a leak, is when the water level drops faster than can be attributed to evaporation or splashing. 1/8"-1/4" is an acceptable loss, unless you are heating the pool and your night is cold.
Is there anything I can do to actually detect and test my own pool for a leak?
Answer:
Yes, you can actually perform the bucket test: Take a 5-gallon bucket and make a mark with a pencil at about the halfway point. Fill bucket with pool water up to that point and set the bucket on the first step of the pool. Use a pencil to mark the water on the outside of the bucket. 24 hours later the measurements should equal the same. In that way, you can determine how much water has evaporated from the bucket and the pool. ***If you're running your heater continually during this process, it will not be an accurate test***
